What is STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure)?

Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP) are reference conditions used in thermodynamics and chemistry to ensure consistent measurements. At STP, temperature is 0°C (273.15 K), and pressure is 1 atm (101.325 kPa).

Using STP allows scientists to easily compare the behavior of gases under standard conditions. The Ideal Gas Law is often used to calculate the number of moles of a gas at these conditions.

The Ideal Gas Law formula is:

PV = nRT

Where:

  • P = Pressure
  • V = Volume
  • n = Number of moles
  • R = Ideal gas constant (0.0821 L·atm/mol·K)
  • T = Temperature in Kelvin
